FOR TIE-DYEING AND GRADATION DYEING

General Supplies

·       5 Tbs. Of Sodium Carbonate

·       Plastic Bag or Drop Sheet

·       2 Cups Non-Iodized Salt

·       T.N.A. Soap

·       Hot Tap Water

·       Large Bucket

·       String or Elastics (for tie dyeing)

·       Gloves, Mask

For each colour

  • 2-5 tsp. of Procion MX Dye (depending on intensity)
  • 3 tsp. of Urea

Instructions:

  1. Wash fabric with 1 Tbsp. of T.N.A Soap to remove dirt and sizing.
  2. Dissolve the Carbonate and Salt in 4-5 L of hot tap water and soak the fabric for 20 minutes. Squeeze excess solution back into the container. The fabric should be just damp. Keep the remaining solution for future use. For tie-dyeing, tie fabrics to desired patterns before soaking.
  3. Dissolve the required amounts of dye and urea in one cup (250mL) of hot tap water. Solution will last two days but the colour is strongest if used in the first four hours.
  4. Place fabric into a bowl or onto plastic drop sheets. Apply the dye solution(s) by brushing, pouring or sponging onto desired areas.
  5. Cover the fabric with another drop sheet or place in bowl and seal with plastic wrap.
  6. To set, follow ONLY one of the following two methods;
  7. i) Microwave on high for 4-5 minutes. Take out package and leave at room temperature for a few hours. When cool, process with Raycafix Dye Fix.
  8. ii) Leave covered or bagged for 24-48 hours at room temperature.
  9. Take fabric out and rinse under cool water until clear. Use Raycafix if dyes bleed persistently. Wash as usual with 1/2 of T.N.A Soap.

Notes:

  • Some dye may come out in subsequent washes. As a precaution wash garment separately initially. If persistent wash with Raycafix Dye Fix.
  • Common sense should be used when handling any dye or chemical. Prolonged inhalation of dye powder can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Avoid breathing the powder and wear a dust mask and rubber gloves. Keep out of eyes and mouth and always supervise children. Keep dyes in a closed container in a cool dry place. In an emergency please contact retailer or refer to MSDS.
